EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMS
"Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." Galatians 6:2
Youth in Salima, Malawi face many challenges. Most are impoverished. Many do not attend high school because their families cannot afford the fees. Young girls are pressured to get married, often as young as 12 years of age.
Cornerstone teachers and camp leaders invest in the lives of Salima's youth through both one-on-one and group mentoring programs. We challenge young men and women to pursue an education. We encourage girls to resist societal pressure to quit school and marry young. We exhort them to dream big and work hard to turn those dreams into reality. We promote Christ-centered living and help children navigate the many challenges they face on a daily basis. We share the gospel and discuss career opportunities through soccer clubs and other recreational activities that keep kids off the streets. We envision children for the hope and future that awaits them.
We also work to empower the families of the children we mentor. We help parents understand the value of an education for both boys and girls. We offer hope and support through the Gospel. And for the neediest children in our midst, we provide practical resources to help families sustain themselves, such as chickens, seeds, and bicycles (to operate an income-generating bicycle taxi service).
